We the people have let social media take over how social interactions and expectations are set. I personally have had limited exposure to social media of any type for over 15 years, but my children, coworkers, and employers have all been both uplifted and victimized by them. During the 2016 elections social media was used as a weapon to divide and attack not only the voting citizens of the United States, but targeted ethnic communities, sexual orientation communities, refugee and immigrant communities and our children. And we let them.
We as a nation bought into the rhetoric, the glamour of feeling seen with likes and re-posts and finally turning over our feeds to algorithms that fed us what others were pushing. When we as a nation started defending our rights to be angry, to be outraged and demanded to be heard we fed the science of the algorithm that controls what content is scene on the internet. When those who were fed up left and turned off their social media it left a hole where others could be heard louder. That hate ran unchecked. Uncivil became even unrulier. The new career of paid "trolling" was born.
We can't change the past, or our actions that either helped or hindered the actions of others. BUT...... We can take action to use their AI Bots, Algorithms, and Cookies against them. We can shift the science behind social media to find the "raging hate" posts to become outlyers of the algorithm and information system they are being fed.
